ThunderWolf's Rainbow ConnectionWelcome, friends of Dorothy!

To those of you too young to recognize that greeting, "Welcome family!" If you didn't recognize the expression, "friends of Dorothy," you may be surpised to learn that our association with the colors of the rainbow started long before Freedom Rings and the many variations of the pride flag were conceived. Once upon a time in gay America we had an icon, now mostly on the fringes, known as Judy Garland. You may recognize her as the girl, Dorothy, in The Wizard of Oz. Because gays at that time had to be so much more closeted than we can even imagine today, the alienated gay population related to Dorothy well when she sang the song Somewhere Over the Rainbow. "Are you a friend of Dorothy?" became code for what today would be stated as, "Are you family?" And as a result, we have been associated with the rainbow and it's many hues ever since. |
